EACA joins call against advertising ban of HFSS foods and beverages

EACA, together with the Association of Commercial Television in Europe (ACT) and the Association of Television and Radio Sales Houses (EGTA) support the goal of the Unfair Consumer Practices Directive (UCPD) but suggest rejecting Amendment 293, which seeks to add “unhealthy” food to the blacklist of commercial practices in the UCPD (Annex I). This would mean that advertising food and beverages high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) would be banned.

The UCPD is currently been reviewed under the ‘New Deal for Consumers‘ package. The amendment will be put to a vote on 22 January in the IMCO Committee (Internal Market and Consumer Protection) in the European Parliament.

The joint call argues that adding HFSS food in the blacklist would strongly conflict with EU rules and cut across national approaches.
