EACA Meets with the European Commission to Address Green Claims in Communications

Last week, a small delegation from our industry, including Chris Upton, Wim Vermeulen, and our colleagues Mónika Magyar and Valentina Méndez, had a significant meeting with Małgorzata Gołębiewska, the Team Leader for Environmental Footprint & Green Claims at the European Commission. The dialogue focused on the evolving challenges our industry faces concerning the Green Claims Directive, which aims to prevent greenwashing by requiring companies to substantiate environmental claims with verifiable evidence, ensuring transparency and trust for consumers.

While the directive seeks to promote accurate green advertising across the EU, it also introduces new challenges for our industry. During the meeting, the EACA discussed the Directive’s implementation timeline, scope and verification process, alignment with related directives such as the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive (UCPD) and the Empowering Consumers Directive (ECD), and the critical need for education to ensure proper application.

Stay tuned for more details in the next EACA Chat, where our delegation will provide further insights into this meeting.
